Meg Daly saw ten miles of possibility beneath Miami’s Metrorail.

The idea came after a bike accident left her with two broken arms.

Unable to drive herself to physical therapy, Meg started taking Metrorail and walking the rest of the trip beneath the elevated tracks. The route was shaded and surprisingly comfortable. It also stretched through miles of underused land.

Meg started imagining what else it could become.

She founded Friends of The Underline and spent the next decade building support for a 10-mile linear park, trail, and community corridor running beneath Metrorail from the Miami River to Dadeland South.

The vision grew to encompass 120 acres. Walking and biking paths. Native landscaping. Playgrounds and exercise areas. Public art. Gathering spaces. Stormwater infrastructure. Safer crossings. Connections to eight Metrorail stations and the neighborhoods along the route.

Turning that vision into a real place required years of coalition building.

Friends of The Underline worked alongside Miami-Dade County, cities along the route, transportation agencies, designers, philanthropies, businesses, and residents to plan, fund, build, and activate the corridor.

The first half-mile opened in Brickell in 2021. Another 2.14 miles opened in 2024. The final phase carries the project another 7.36 miles toward Dadeland South.

Meg has since moved from leading Friends of The Underline day to day into her current role as Founder and Executive Chair, while continuing to help guide the long-term stewardship of the corridor.

The tracks were already there. So was the land underneath them.

Meg helped Miami imagine another life for both.
